Know the Smell of Propane Gas

Propane used in your home is infused with an odorant to facilitate detection. The odor resembles that of rotten eggs, a skunk’s spray, or a dead animal. If you detect the smell of propane gas in your home or on your property, follow the steps below immediately.

If You Smell Propane in Your Home

  • Leave the area: Evacuate everyone from the building or area where you suspect gas is leaking.
  • Extinguish flames and sparks: Put out all flames and sparks, including smoking materials and open flames. Avoid using anything that could create a spark or electrical charge, such as lights, appliances or telephones.
  • Shut off the gas: If it’s safe to do so, turn off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank. To close the valve, turn it to the right (clockwise). If you have multiple tanks, turn them all off.
  • Report the leak: Immediately contact Payne Oil Company, from a neighbor’s home or nearby building. If you’re unable to reach us, call 911 or your local fire department.
  • Do not return to the building or area: Wait until Payne Oil Company, an emergency responder, or a qualified service technician confirms that it’s safe to do so.
  • Get your system checked: Have a qualified Payne Oil Company service technician inspect your entire system before attempting to use any propane appliances.
